FIRST AID FOR ASTHMA ATTACHS

first aid for asthma

There are a lot of people who suffer from asthma. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects the air passages of the lungs. It basically narrows and that is the reason why asthma sufferers have difficulty in breathing during an asthma attack.

There are different causes of asthma attack. Examples of these are:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pollution
  • Smoke
  • Illness
  • Infection
  • Chemical
  • Exercise
  • Stress

You always have to watch out for the different symptoms of asthma attack and these are the following:

  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty of breathing and talking
  • Signs and symptoms of hypoxia or low oxygen in the body
  • Anxiety

During an asthma attack, you have to remain and calm and make sure that you know what to. If not, this is the first aid treatment for asthma attack:

  1. Check for asthma plan – if the person has an asthma plan, follow it. If not, then proceed to the next steps.
  2. Position – sit the person upright. Never let them curl up or lie down.
  3. Reassure – this will keep him or her calm and lower his or her anxiety. But don’t encourage them to talk. Let them relax and stay calm.
  4. Loosen his or her clothing
  5. Medication – if he or she has a medication or an inhaler, help him or her in using it. If he or she doesn’t have one, borrow one or use one that’s in your first aid kit.
  6. Move the patient – you don’t need to move the person if he or she is in a safe place. Just assist them in positioning them to an upright position. This is because moving them to another place can make it even difficult for them to breathe. However, you are allowed to move them if there is danger in the current environment he or she is in or if the environment is making his or her breathing worse.
  7. Call 911 and stay with the patient – stay with the patient while waiting for help and continue to give him or her reassurance. It is important not to heighten the anxiety of the patient. Otherwise, it can worsen his or her condition.
  8. Stay calm – don’t add to the anxiety of the patient. As a first aider, you have to remain calm this way your patient won’t panic as well.

So these are a few things that you need to remember when giving first aid to a patient suffering from asthma attacks.
