Rock Climbing Tuscany Region

Tuscany is one of the most famous tourist locations in Europe, thanks to it renowned history, its endless artistic beauties, its wonderful landscape and the quality of the produce grown and made there, especially its wine. It is a mostly hilly region, except for the mountain stretch of the Apuan Alps. It also has a long stretch of coastline looking out onto the Tyrrhenian Sea. There are several good climbing areas to enjoy as you mix with the wealth of cultural attractions.

The climbing is Tuscany is not destination worthy, in the sense that most sites are not places to spend 3-4 days.  The best way to explore the climbing areas is by car, because the public transportation is not flexible enough for a climbing vacation.  There are a few new bouldering areas open near the Monte Amiata area.

PLEASE READ:

If you can get to one of the sites I have described: be sure and buy the local guidebook if it is being sold by someone who has bolted routes in the area. The routes I recommend and routes I have tried over the years, I cannot tell you how some of the routes are now since I do not climb at the same level.

Tuscany Rock Climbing Sites

Monsummano Rossa Climbing Area, Pistoia Province

MONSUMMANO ROSSA ROCK CLIMBING AREA | TUSCANY REGION

Rock Climb Italy, Monsummano Site

Monsummano Rossa is an old quarry area near Montecatini Terme which has become one of the winter sites for climbers in Tuscany.  The area is well protected for the elements and the climbing is on routes well protected.  Most of the climbing tends to be in the middle grade of difficulty but there are plenty of easier climbs to enjoy.  I like the area and would suggest a stop if you are driving from Pisa to Florence.

ST ANNA DI STAZZEMA (MONTE LIETO) ROCK CLIMBING AREA | TUSCANY REGION

Rock Climbing Italy, Monte Lieto

The Sant'Anna climbing area is an interesting place with a few walls about the town of S. Anna.  The rock is interesting and if you find yourself nearby and looking for somewhere different to relax, try the cliff.  Well protected and even though it sits at 800 meters elevation you can still climb if it rains or there is snow.
