Rock Climbing Lazio Region

Most of the region of Lazio is overlooked due to the attraction of Rome on visitors, the whole of region offers a range of alternative itineraries with a wide choice of historical and artistic sights and scenery. To the north of the region, are the ruins of the mysterious and fascinating Etruscans, or south lies Tarquinia, where lies one of the most important necropolis yet discovered, particularly famous for its paintings which provide a tangible and fascinating picture of Etruscan life and customs. Another itinerary in the heart of Etruria lies inland, combining the beautiful landscapes of the great Latium lakes with the environmental interest of ancient, picturesque villages submerged in a gentle silent countryside.

As a climbing destination Lazio is a pleasant surprise.  There are plenty of good cliffs to enjoy, and many can be reached by public transportation plus that are near many of the sties you would want to visit.  The best site is Sperlonga if you want to relax along the beach.  Otherwise, Grotti and La Curva are the best places with plenty of good challenging routes to enjoy.

PLEASE READ:

If you can get to one of the sites I have described: be sure and buy the local guidebook if it is being sold by someone who has bolted routes in the area. The routes I recommend and routes I have tried over the years, I cannot tell you how some of the routes are now since I do not climb at the same level.

Sperlonga Climbing Area, Latina Province

The Cave area in Sperlonga is perhaps one of my all time favorite climbing areas in the far south.  There are three specific sectors in the area, Muro bianco (the white wall), Avancorpi, and the Arenauta area along the beach.  You can climb here all year but only at the cave in the summer, but the rock does consume your skin rather quickly.  There are lots of fun moves and easier stuff to warm up on and for rest days.  Plus it is right on the beach.

Agro Pontino Climbing Area, Latina Province

Agro Pontino climbing site is one of the area's closest to the city of Roma, but due to its exposure to the sun it can only really be visited during the winter months.  It is an area very near the sea and there are 5 specific sectors that have been developed.  The last time I was there it was still being developed and there seemed to be potential to expand the number of routes.  This site, unlike many in the area is well bolted with good quality equipment.

Picinisco Climbing Area, Frosinone Province

The Picinisco climbing site in located in the southwestern part of the Lazio region in the mountains.  The area is a series of small cliffs, that sit at 1000 meters elevation, and each sector offers varied styles of climbing.  Not the rock is outstanding, but this is not a destination site, just a nice relaxing rest area if you happen to be passing through.  The mountain area is very isolated and quite, just not that not all routes are bolted with the newest equipment.
