PASSO CAMPOGROSSO | DOLOMITES
Passo Campogrosso in the Piccolo Dolomites, sits at 1457 meters a.s.l. in the Vicenza Province of the Veneto Region. The Passo Campogrosso is just before the regional border between the Veneto Region and Trentino Alto Adige Region, and separates the Carega Mountain and Mount Cornetto, which are part of the Piccolo Dolomites, the southern most section of the Italian Dolomites.
The Pass is a great start point for mountain walks and rides, in fact Friedrich Nietzsche wondered these mountains while staying in Recoaro Terme. The stimulated his writing creativity to produce 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'-
As far as landscape is concerned, Recoaro is one of my most beautiful experiences. I literally chased after its beauty, and expended a great deal of energy and enthusiasm on it. The beauty of nature, like every other kind of beauty, is quite jealous; it demands that one serve it alone.
—Friedrich Nietzsche, Letter to Heinrich Köselitz, June 23, 1881
The area is well known for its mineral water, and a spa for health and recovery was established there in the late 1600's, the road leading up to Passo Campogrosso is only on one side. The road was built by Italian military during the Frist War World to move supplies up to the fortifications.
