Rock Climbing Italy, Andonno Climbing Area Piedmont

Andonno or 'Il Cros di Andonno', has a special place in Italian sport climbing history.  At one time the route Naio 8c, was the hardest in Italy.  There are several high level grades at the site and lots of great climbers you have never heard of frequent the area.  There are several sectors in the area, and this is a great destination site for a weeks worth of climbing.

PIEDMONT REGION ROCK CLIMBING GUIDE

castello montalto dora

The Piedmont Region lies in a peripheral position with respect to the rest of Italy, but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.  Most people whom visit Italy only see the vast urban centers of Torino, but there is a vast area for outdoor activities from biking, hiking and climbing.  This is an area I always have on my to explore more list.

The Piedmontese Alps rise as mighty massifs which, at some points, reach to over 4,000 m. (Mount Rosa, 4,633 m.; Gran Paradiso, 4,061 m.). The transition from this mountainous region to the plain is marked by a discontinuous belt of moraine high ground (Rivoli and Ivrea amphitheatres, the Vercelli and Novara hills) which does not detract from the impression of clear contrast between the encircling mountains and the plain which in fact lies `at the foot of the mountains'.
