This crag is situated on the southern face of M.Gallo, and is made of a mainly overhanging band of rock, a few hundred metres long and about fifty metres high. The rock is red limestone full of pockets and concretions an athletic or endurance type of climbing is required for this kind of rock, but it is always exciting.
The area is isolated and very quiet, even though it is situated close to a huge building complex, one of Palermo’s major urbanistic disasters, for the most part uninhabited.
Apart from this unpleasant sight, there is a beautiful view, of most parts of the city spreading out far towards the Conca d’Oro mountains. We recommend you climb here during the winter, even if when windy it is very cold. During the warmer months it is preferable to climb early ,in the morning or late in the afternoon.
From Palermo go towards Mondello, cross the Force della Favorita and follow Viale Regina Margherita, then along the seafront towards the centre of town reach a junction with a play ground, turn left as if to go back towards Palermo and after 100 metres turn right and take via Tolomea, windy uphill road, at the top of the hill turn left following via Tolomea for about 500 metres and before you reach Poggio Mondello residence take a small road to your right from which you will already see the red crag. After the first part of the road in tarmac, the road becomes in part a natural trail, if you have difficulty in reaching the Forestry gate where you normally park (watch out for the bumps on the road!!) leave your car in one of the spaces you will find along the road. Before the bridge close to the Forestry gate descend into the small valley and climb back up following the fencing along a comfortable path indicated with yellow marks in the direction of the crags.
