In 1492 the Republic of Venice elevated Thiene to the rank of town, granting it the privileged right to a free market, which has been held here on Mondays ever since. A historical re-enactment is held every October. The town centers around the fashionable Corso Garibaldi, whose sequence of shop windows serve as a reminder of the town’s cenuries-old commercial vocation. The hub of the historical town is Piazza Chilesotti, dominated by the belltower of the cathedral that lies behind and by aa crenellated curtain wall evocate of the majestic architecture of villa Da Proto-Colleoni, known as the “castle”.
